Motya (Mozia) - Sicily
Portrait of Giuseppe Whitaker (1850-1936) near the museum of Mozia.
Whitaker devoted the last years of his life to archaeology, purchasing the island of Motya the site of the Phoenician town founded in the 8th century BC.
- Motya (Mozia, Motyé) was an ancient and powerful city on San Pantaleo Island off the west coast of Sicily, in the Stagnone Lagoon between Drepanum (modern Trapani) and Lilybaeum (modern Marsala).
- The Carthaginian city has been destroyed by the Greeks in 398 BC.
- The island is nearly 850 m long and 750 m wide, and about 1 km from the mainland of Sicily.
- Today Motya is owned and operated by the Whitaker Foundation.
