Italian poet, playwright and military commander Gabriele D'Annunzio was born on 12 March 1863 in Pescara and died on 1 March 1938 in Gardone.

A hugely popular cultural figure at the beginning of the 20th Century, he was also well known for his political right-wing activism and is considered a precursor of Mussolini's fascist era. Among his many lovers, actress Eleonora Duse and noblewoman Luisa Casati.
