On April 17, 1958, Expo 58, the first world exhibition after the end of the Second World War, was opened in Brussels. Since then, the Atomium has been one of the most popular sights in the Belgian capital.

It represents a strongly enlarged cubic cell consisting of nine atoms of the crystal model of iron, is 102 meters high and weighs 2,400 tons. The design was made by engineer André Waterkeyn, and the building was constructed by architects André and Jean Polak.
