1945 - Rebuilding Europe
Some of the most poignant images connected to the Second World War are photographs taken of the immediate post-war period, not only in Germany but across Europe, as civilians attempted to rebuild their lives, often literally in the case of the famous "Trümmerfrauen", the German "rubble women" tasked with clearing the buildings destroyed during the war. Across Europe, civilians dealt with chronic food shortages and searched desperately for missing loved ones.
