Artemisia Gentileschi
The painting by the most famous woman artist of the 17th century has been rediscovered in France and will go on sale at Sotheby's today. Artemisia Gentileschi was born in Rome on 8 July 1593 and became the first woman ever to be admitted to the Accademia dell’ Arte del Disegno in Florence in 1616. Her most famous painting is the disturbingly violent "Judith and Holofernes" which is still the subject of much speculation among art historians. It is believed that Artemisia painted the first version during her rape trial which her father Orazio had brought against his colleague Agostino Tassi. This small selection shows the painter's vast talent.
