Vietnam War
To coincide with the fortieth anniversary of the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975 and the end the Vietnam War, we have brought together images, including many in colour, of this defining battle of the Cold War era.

The North Vietnamese, supported by the might of the Soviet Union, China and other Communist forces, defeated the South Vietnamese supported by the United States and other anti-Communist countries. The war was and remains controversial, with demonstrations against United States involvement in the war becoming national and international news in 1965, after the United States began bombing campaigns in North Vietnam. The experiences of women on both sides of the conflict, as well as the involvement of African American military personnel, have been widely discussed and examined in the years following the war, and the war itself remains a popular backdrop and subject for numerous television series and movies, as well as novels, video games and even the Broadway musical 'Miss Saigon'.
