Belief in miracle cures
threaten the species

Rhino, tiger and now the giraffe. The belief in miracle cures when Western medicine has none now threatens the survival of the giraffe. More and more people believe that the bones and bone marrow of the giraffe can heal HIV and Aids which makes the gentle giant a target for poachers. In Africa the number of giraffes has reduced by 40% in the last 15 years.
Even the Romans loved the giraffe and as this selection of images shows we can find depictions of this beautiful animal as far back as rock painting. We can but hope that protcetive measures will be taken to stop the poaching.
