1944/45 - Death marches (Todesmärsche)
From 1944, as the front came closer, the SS dissolved the eastern concentration camps, including the notorious Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp, and forced most concentration camp inmates to march towards the Reichmitte. At the same time, the guards set fire to parts of the camp to cover the tracks of their destruction mesh series.
Many prisoners did not survive the days and weeks of marches. People froze to death, starved to death, or collapsed weakened and were then shot dead by the SS guards.
