Jacques Chirac, born on November 29th, 1932 in Paris. After finishing university and his military service in Algeria, he attended the École nationale d’administration (ENA) in Paris. In the early 1960s, he became a personal advisor to Prime Minister and later President Georges Pompidou. In the 1970s, the Gaullist was twice appointed as Prime Minister by President Valery Giscard d’Estaing. In 1977 he was elected Mayor of Paris for the first time. After two unsuccessful attempts, he won the presidential election against socialist candidate Lionel Jospin in 1995. In 2002 he is confirmed in office. As the first French head of state, Chirac acknowledges his country’s complicity in the persecution of the Jews during the German occupation. With German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder he vehemently opposes the Bush administration’s plans of attacking Iraq.
