August 2019: 250 Years since the Birth of Napoleon Bonaparte
August 2019 marks 500 years since the birth of Napoleon Bonaparte (French military and political leader; 15 August 1769 – 5 May 1821):
After seizing political power in France during a coup d’état in 1799, Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself emperor in 1804. He subsequently waged war against various coalitions of European nations and conquered much of Europe in the process. However, after an unsuccessful French invasion of Russia in 1812, Napoleon abdicated the throne and was exiled to the island of Elba. In 1815, he briefly returned to power during his so-called "Hundred Days campaign". Yet after another crushing defeat at the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon abdicated once again and was exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena, where he died in 1821 aged 51.
